General Information

Current Status

Version 4.5 - 8th December 2015

Changes in this version

•  Cheat modes
•  Multiple sound schemes
•  Spirits less likely to get trapped/confused

KRepton is an implementation of the classic Repton 3 game, which was originally produced for the BBC Micro and was the third successful Repton game for Superior Software. KRepton brings the original game to the KDE desktop, and can be used on any of its supported platforms.

The game and editor are released under the GNU General Public Licence; briefly this means that you are free to use or modify the applications or their source code yourself, and pass it on to anyone else under the same terms. I would suggest, though, that if you do make any improvements or modifications, that you send me a copy so that they can be incorporated into updated versions.

The current version 4 integrates the game player and editor into a single seamless application, so there is now only one download. An episode can be selected using a graphical preview list, and immediately played or edited, without having to switch between two separate applications.

There is an import wizard to allow Repton levels and graphics in other formats to be played. Currently the only import format supported is BBC Repton 3; any information or code for decoding other file formats would be most welcome!

If you have fond memories of the original Repton games then you won't need to be told any more; download and play the game now! If you don't know anything about them but would like to find out more then there is far more information online than I could list here; some very useful Repton sites are:

Release and Version History

KRepton was originally written by Sandro Sigala for Linux using the SVGAlib library, and then rewritten entirely using the QT and KDE libraries for release 1.0 of KDE.

Sandro is continuing to maintain Repton as FX-Repton, using the portable Fox Toolkit. So if you want to run the game on Windows(TM) or on any system that doesn't have KDE, then get this version.

KRepton was converted to KDE 3 at version 3.0 and subsequently to KDE 4 at version 4.5. This version is currently maintained by Jonathan Marten. The home and download page is www.keelhaul.me.uk/krepton (you're looking at it now!).

For detailed and up-to-date change information subsequent to version 3.0, see the latest ChangeLog file in the distribution archive.

Some of my and Sandro's ideas for future additions and features are in the TODO file in the distribution archive. In the true free software tradition, if you have any further ideas or would like to implement any of these then please feel free to do so; if you send me any changes or patches then I will try to incorporate them into future versions. Please also let me know, of course, if you find or fix any problems with either the game or editor.

Downloads

These are source downloads. Precompiled versions for some Linux distributions may be available from the application page at kde-apps.org or other KDE download sites.

The applications are compiled and install in the same way as any other standard KDE application. If you're not familiar with this process, see the INSTALL file within the distribution archives for more information.

Please note that the build and install system has changed for KDE4 applications, it now uses cmake instead of autoconf. See the updated INSTALL file for instructions.
